2007 | October 25, Manila -- Ombudsman Ma. Merceditas N. Gutierrez placed yesterday under a six-month preventive suspension six officials of the Bureau of Customs (BoC) for the alleged smuggling of 16 luxury vehicles in February 2007.

Ordered suspended were Jocelyn Dullas, acting chief of the Certificate of Payment Unit; Orlando Ronquillo, Rustico Mallari, and Enrico Cruz, examiners; and Ebrahim Pankatan and Rodolfo Casis, principal appraisers, all from the BoC Port of Subic.

Their suspension stemmed from a complaint filed by the Department of Finance-Revenue Integrity Protection Service (DoF-RIPS) before the Office of the Ombudsman.

In its complaint, DoF-RIPS said that on Feb. 10, 2007, Customs Commissioner Napoleon Morales was informed of the alleged smuggling of 16 high-end luxury vehicles consigned to Hidemitsu Trading Corp.

They were four BMW passenger cars, two SUV Acura MDX passenger cars, a Cadillac Escalade Ext-pick up truck 2007, a Cadillac Escalade Utility Vehicle 2007, three Audi A8L passenger cars 2006, a Corvette Convertible passenger car 2006, an SUV Infinity FX45 2005, an SUV Nissan Armada 2006, a Mercedes Benz S550 passenger car 2006, and a Mercedes Benz S350 passenger car 2006.

The report said that the vehicles were taken out of the Subic Bay Freeport without the payment of required taxes and duties.

Based on investigation conducted by the BoC’s Task Force Anti-Smuggling-Special Operation Group (TFAS-SOG), two of the vehicles, the Mercedes Benz S550 and S350, were still inside the SBMA.

Of the remaining 14 vehicles, it said, five were spotted at the Auto Trend Center on Timog Ave., Quezon City, five were seen at the Viper Auto Trading on Circumferential Road, Angeles City, and four were found at 7603 Sunset Valley Mansion, Angeles City.

It also found out that "these cars were taken out of Subic Bay Freeport Zone without the payment of the correct taxes."
